I don't have a lot of value to contribute in this post save for the recommendation that the word "Terb" be made shorthand for "Terabyte"
We already have "K" for Kilobytes, "Megs" for Megabytes, "Gigs" for Gigabytes. I'm sure I have seen "Pets" already as a stand-in for Petabytes. I know what you are thinking. 'Why not teras?' Fair. It follows the naming convention of the others, after all. It is also boring and lame. I move that we ignore the sensible option and move on to adopting "Terb".
To encourage this, I have written this short haiku about terbs.
terabyte
is awkward to say
terb better
Example sentences:
- "This processor can address up to three terbs of ram!"
- "These are mirrored and striped, so together they make a 4 terb Raid 10 array."
- "I had to kill the process, it was out of control! The log file was half a terb!"
- "It can burst to transfer speeds of up to 40 terbs a second!"
Compare to other abbreviations that already enjoy wide usage, despite their ambiguity:
- "I only have two gigs remaining!", "Oh? Is the drive full?", "My band's calendar."
- "Shut-up, Megs"
- "My hard disk is full", "K"
I insist we adopt this immediately.
